(1881-1967)
Bhend is one of the most famous ice axe makers of ice axes. Based in
Grindelwald Switzerland, at the base of the Eiger, Karl Bhend founded his shop
in 1870 that evolved into making ice axes. Two generations of Alfred Bhend
followed. Bhend axes are known for their graceful curves and fine lines. This axe is fairly
rare in that it has a wooden
spike guard/plug, for ski mountaineering to avoid injuries
in case of falls, was the only manufacturer version who commercially had these.
